Bon Anniversaire is one of the few things I remember from my four years of studying French in junior high and high school. (I went on to study Spanish the final two years of school- feliz cupleanos is the Spanish equivalent of bon anniversaire.) It means happy birthday. I always found it interesting that the French used a word with the same root as the English anniversary instead of having a totally separate word for birthday. The common root made it the perfect phrase for today because not only is it the 1 year anniversary of my publishing company, Dewy Moss, but it's also my sister's birthday!
Bon Aniversaire sis!
As one tends to do on occasions such as this, I've found myself looking back on all that's been achieved in the past twelve months. One of the most unexpected things that has come from this first year is that some of my friends and family, and even strangers, have said I'm an inspiration. That is amazing to me because I usually feel like my life is a game of Jenga and with one wrong move it will all fall down. So the fact that a move that I've made has inspired others to make moves in their lives is really kind of awesome sauce to me.
People have even asked me for advice. What!?! I give them the best advice I have. If you're a writer and have always dreamed of writing a novel, my one and only piece of writing advice is that you follow the number one rule of writing. That rule is: WRITE! Everyday, sit down and write something. Write anything. Don't worry if someone will like it, or if the sentence has a comma splice, just write.
To those with a dream other than writing, my advice is to know it's never too late to make a dream a reality (unless your dream is to become a child star- sorry, that boat has sailed and sunk). Seriously, if your dream is on the back burner, you don't have to move it to the front, just light a fire under it until it's done.
